How It Works

This calculator breaks down your monthly electric bill into seven major categories using U.S. Department of Energy national averages. Here is what happens under the hood:

1. Baseline split: We start with DOE climate-zone percentages for HVAC, water heating, lighting, refrigeration, laundry, electronics, and other appliances.
2. Heating fuel adjustment: If you select natural gas, oil, or propane for heating, we reduce the HVAC electricity share by 40% and redistribute that portion to "other."
3. Home-size scaling: The national average home is 2,000 sq ft. Your inputs scale the HVAC, lighting, and other categories proportionally.
4. Occupant scaling: Water heating, laundry, and refrigeration costs are scaled by the number of occupants relative to the national average of 2.5.
5. Normalization: All percentages are re-normalized to 100% so the pie chart and bar chart always sum to your total bill.
