But they don't compare you to historical costs. They don't show you that your $340 bill is 200% higher than the same month five years ago. They don't show you that your "efficiency" is costing more than your neighbor's "inefficiency" cost in 2020. They create a false sense of accomplishment. They make you feel good about using less energy per square foot while you're paying more per square foot than ever before. It's like congratulating someone for losing weight while they're starving. The metric is wrong. The context is missing. And the result is a psychological trap that makes you blame yourself for costs that are entirely systemic.
