I was at a friend’s house last year and noticed she had her dryer running almost constantly. Two kids, lots of sports uniforms, she was doing laundry every single day. I see vent problems all the time. Crushed hoses, clogged lint traps, birds’ nests in the exterior vent, hoses that are too long and sagging. Each of these problems makes your dryer work longer and harder. A clogged vent can double your drying time. That’s like doubling your cost per load.

Here’s what you should do. Once a year, pull your dryer away from the wall and check the vent hose. If it’s the flexible foil type, replace it with semi‑rigid metal or rigid metal. Foil hoses have ridges that catch lint and restrict airflow. Metal is smoother and safer. Also check the exterior vent cap. When the dryer is running, you should feel strong airflow. If you don’t, something is blocked.

I had a client named Paul whose dryer was taking two hours to dry jeans. I found a bird’s nest in the exterior vent. The vent cap had broken off, and a sparrow had moved in. We cleaned it out, replaced the cap, and his drying time dropped to 45 minutes. He saved about $150 a year. He also stopped having to run the dryer twice for every load.
